Chapter Ten: Holiday Plan in Action
I am fidgeting with the straw in my drink, playing with it and pushing it down around the ice. The day is finally here and my stomach is in knots. Not only because I’ll be seeing Hunter again, but also because this is the first test in our joint venture together. And because I wanted to make sure I looked perfect for this evening, I took the whole day off from work. Even Darla couldn’t quite believe it. I have to say, though, its done wonders for my nerves. I spent the morning soaking in my bathtub and the afternoon getting all done up at my salon. My fingers and toes have a fresh coat of red nail polish on them and my makeup is understated, yet sophisticated.
Hunter and I agreed to meet at the bar in the lobby of the St. Regis Hotel at six forty five, exactly fifteen minutes before the cocktail hour was to start. The St. Regis is where the holiday party is taking place, which fits the image of the firm to a tee because it’s extremely stylish and unbelievably posh. It’s the same place every year. The partners at Gotsall spare no expense for this holiday extravaganza and the New Year’s Party is the event of the year. Nothing compares to it. Months and months of planning go into it and every single detail is discussed to its minutiae. Both Darla and Candace Wigs are on the planning committee and they take great pride in the final unveiling, as well as in the compliments they both receive throughout the night.
By six o’clock, I am dressed and heading downstairs to catch a cab to the hotel. I left myself enough time to spare, even with the weekend traffic, and arrive at the hotel by six fifteen. I sit down at the bar and order a vodka and cranberry drink.
Forty minutes later, I’m still nursing the same drink and I am glancing at my watch every thirty seconds. He’s late. How can he do this to me? He knows how important this is! We’ve gone over this a million times before. I’m panicking and start wondering if he’ll even show up at all. I can’t help but think he’s still mad at me about what happened at the pub-crawl and isn’t planning on coming tonight to teach me a lesson. But this doesn't make any sense since he seemed fine when he took me to visit Horizons. In fact, he was more than fine. This is what I get for mixing personal with business. I need to learn to follow my instincts. I’m supposed to be at the rooftop of this hotel for the Gotsall holiday party right about now, but instead I am sitting at the bar in the lobby nursing a drink like a lush. I suppose I can go up there alone, but I know I can’t. I already promised Charles Wigs that tonight he will be meeting my investment banker boyfriend, Tom Maguire, and I can’t walk in there without him.
